This is a beautiful Immigrant Trunk with
brass buttons and double European Locks. Some people referred to this type
of trunk as a Gold Rush trunk due to the brass buttons that looked like
gold nuggets, while this trunk is similar in style it is not a true Gold
Rush trunk. This trunk is made of solid pine and the patina is rich due to
the age. The strapping and lip are made of steel and the unusual double
locks on this trunk are also unique and were only made for a few years and
date back to the 1870's. What is rare is to have the top latches intact on
both of the locks, it is common to have these missing. Neither of these
locks work which is a minor detail and does not detract from the look of
this trunk in any way. The handles are original and the leather hinges
have been replaced in the original style to the lid of this trunk. Please
note that these hinges are very unique and I rarely see them on a trunk,
look closely and you will see that the hinges on the back are made of
leather and have been notched into the wood for a perfect fit! It is of
great size measuring 33.5"L X 19.5W X 22.5"H (at the dome). This would
make a great conversation piece in anyone's home and provide quite a bit
of storage as well. Ca 1870 - 1890
