Small Gothic Style Wood Box With Decorative Nails and Tray |
|
|
This is an
exquisite decorative arts woodenware box. The box is decorated in brass
knob spikes, that have been painted black and then have worn off with age
to reveal the brass again. These knobs give this little box the Gothic
look that is so unusual. This primitive letter box dates back to the mid
1800's. This old coffer is popularly referred to as a bible box. Fact of
the matter, however, is that a bible box was seldom used to house a bible
and was more likely used to store money or family valuables. The carpenter
or artist used much care to construct this box and then used very simple
but effective method of locking it with a ring and tab latch. The top
latch has been broken but I have left it in its original character. Where
ever this collectible 19th century beauty ends up, one thing is certain:
It will bring old world charm and sophisticated elegance to any space it
occupies. There is wear on this little wooden box, in particular, are the
numerous tack holes on the lid where the previous owner had once tacked up
numerous postcards inside the lid. Only traces of these cards were left
when I got this trunk and I was unable to save any of them, but these tack
holes in no way detract from the strong aesthetic appeal of the piece. In
fact and to the contrary, these battle scars add tremendously to the warm
and wonderful patina. This box also has the original wooden tray as well.
The box measures 18.5 inches long , 9 inches wide, and 7.5 inches tall.
