This is a wonderful Saratoga Grade Trunk.
While there is some controversy over the definition of a Saratoga
Trunk, we think the definition of a high grade, round top, metal
trunk, made attractively and built strong identifies this trunk
well. This trunk has numerous hardwood slats to protect the body of
this trunk and on every end of these beautiful hardwood slats are
decorative cast iron end caps, corners and handle caps, some are
embossed with initials and others such as the handle caps are just
decorative. This is truly a example of the high end quality of
trunks of its day. The slight use of tin on the corners is all
original and in very good shape. This trunk originally was covered
in canvas but we have taken all of the worn material off and came
across a original patent date stamp on the top of the trunk of 1888,
it is very faint on the far left side top, but it is there, and
again makes this a very unique trunk. The lock on this wonderful
high dome trunk is quite fancy brass along with the lock plate and
the trunk would have probably been rather expensive when it was sold
originally. This is a wonderful example of a large Saratoga Grade
trunk and it is a LARGE trunk. We date this lock to be in the 1870's
to 1890's which is consistent with the patent date on the top. The
interior is clean and has been sanded smooth with no odors and can
be used to store many items, sit at the end of a bed, or the trunk
is great for display in a foyer under a piece of your art.
